RBI Grade B 2026 Descriptive English Previous Year Questions: Essay, Precis and RC

If you are preparing for RBI Grade B 2027, the previous year’s Descriptive English questions should be one of your starting points.

Previous Year Questions (PYQs) help you understand something that generic preparation material cannot fully reveal: the actual nature, depth and variety of writing tasks candidates faced in the examination.

The RBI Grade B 2026 Phase II examination for the General stream was conducted on 25 July 2026.

The English Writing Skills paper tested candidates through three major components:

Essay Writing | Precis Writing | Reading Comprehension

In this article, we reconstruct the RBI Grade B 2026 Descriptive English questions based on candidate recollections and post-exam feedback and examine what they mean for RBI Grade B 2027 preparation.

Important: RBI does not provide the complete Phase II English question paper for public PYQ analysis. Therefore, the questions and passage themes discussed below are memory-based reconstructions and should not be treated as verbatim official RBI questions.

RBI Grade B 2026 Descriptive English Paper: Quick Overview

The memory-based structure of the 2026 English Writing Skills paper was:

SectionMarks
Essay Writing40
Precis Writing30
Reading Comprehension30
Total100

Duration: 90 Minutes

Answers were required to be typed using the keyboard.

This meant candidates had to manage reading, analysis, idea generation, structuring, typing and revision within the same 90-minute window.

RBI Grade B 2026 Essay Questions

The Essay section carried 40 marks.

Candidates reportedly had four topics and had to attempt any one. The expected essay length was around 600-620 words.

The four memory-based topics were as follows.

Essay 1: Ageing Population and Socio-Economic Conditions

The first topic broadly asked candidates to discuss the impact of an ageing population on the socio-economic conditions of a nation.

This was strongly connected with Economic and Social Issues.

A candidate could explore dimensions such as:

  • rising life expectancy;
  • declining fertility;
  • increasing old-age dependency;
  • pension and social-security requirements;
  • healthcare expenditure;
  • changes in the labour force;
  • savings and consumption patterns;
  • productive ageing; and
  • opportunities associated with the silver economy.

The important lesson is that RBI did not require English preparation in isolation.

Knowledge developed through ESI preparation could directly strengthen the Essay section.

Essay 2: Localised Conflicts and Their Impact on Neutral Economies

Another essay focused broadly on how conflicts concentrated in one geographical region can affect economies that are not directly involved in those conflicts.

The issue could be analysed through a chain such as:

Conflict -> Energy Prices -> Shipping Disruption -> Freight Costs -> Supply-Chain Pressure -> Inflation -> Wider Economic Impact

This was a current-affairs-oriented topic, but simply knowing about a particular conflict would not have been enough.

The candidate needed to explain how the economic consequences are transmitted from one region to another.

For RBI Grade B 2027 aspirants, this is an important indication of the analytical nature of essay writing.

Essay 3: Education as the Kindling of a Flame

The third essay was based on the idea that education should ignite thinking rather than merely fill the mind with information.

This was an abstract and social topic.

Candidates could discuss:

  • rote learning versus understanding;
  • information versus knowledge;
  • critical thinking;
  • creativity;
  • problem-solving;
  • role of teachers;
  • changing educational methods;
  • technology and artificial intelligence; and
  • skill-oriented education.

This question demonstrates why aspirants should practise abstract topics in addition to economics and current affairs.

A good RBI essay writer should be capable of interpreting an idea and then connecting it with contemporary realities.

Essay 4: Leadership, Role Allocation and Functional Merit

The fourth topic dealt broadly with leadership and allocation of organisational responsibilities according to competence, authority and functional requirements.

This brought Management directly into the English paper.

Relevant dimensions could include:

  • competence;
  • functional expertise;
  • accountability;
  • authority;
  • role clarity;
  • organisational efficiency;
  • leadership; and
  • merit-based allocation of responsibilities.

Once again, knowledge acquired while preparing Finance and Management could be converted into essay content.

What Do the 2026 Essay Questions Tell RBI Grade B 2027 Aspirants?

Look at the diversity:

Essay ThemeBroad Area
Ageing PopulationESI / Society
Conflict and Economic SpilloversEconomy / Current Affairs
Purpose of EducationAbstract / Social
Leadership and Role AllocationManagement

There is an important preparation lesson here.

Do not prepare for RBI Grade B Essay Writing by memorising 40 or 50 complete essays.

Instead, build strong knowledge around broad domains:

Economy | Society | Management | Technology | Environment | Education | Governance | Current Affairs

Then learn how to convert that knowledge into a structured essay according to the exact question asked.

RBI Grade B 2026 Precis Writing Question

The Precis Writing section carried 30 marks.

The passage reportedly revolved around the relationship between architecture, the built environment and human health.

The passage included interconnected ideas relating to:

  • building design;
  • ventilation;
  • natural light;
  • indoor air quality;
  • respiratory health;
  • circadian rhythm;
  • psychological well-being;
  • architecture and disease; and
  • creation of healthier built environments.

This was therefore not a passage that could be compressed effectively by mechanically selecting one sentence from every paragraph.

Candidates first needed to identify the underlying argument:

The physical environment in which people live and work can significantly influence their health and well-being, making thoughtful architectural design an important consideration.

The candidate then had to identify the major supporting ideas, remove examples and repetition, and reconstruct the argument concisely.

What Does the 2026 Precis Tell Us?

Precis preparation requires three core abilities:

Identification -> Compression -> Reconstruction

First, identify the central argument and major supporting points.

Second, eliminate repetition, illustrations and secondary details.

Third, reconstruct the remaining ideas in clear and concise language.

This is why good general English does not automatically guarantee good Precis Writing.

It is a separate skill and needs deliberate practice.

RBI Grade B 2026 Reading Comprehension Questions

Reading Comprehension carried 30 marks, reportedly through six questions of five marks each.

The memory-based RC passage dealt broadly with mathematics education and weaknesses in mathematical learning, including issues around:

  • foundational mathematical ability;
  • secondary-school learning;
  • higher education;
  • declining mathematical proficiency;
  • learning habits;
  • use of technology and AI; and
  • balancing technological assistance with conceptual understanding.

The exact wording of all six questions is not reliably available, so aspirants should be cautious about websites presenting reconstructed RC questions as an official verbatim paper.

What matters for preparation is the nature of the task.

Candidates needed to read a relatively analytical passage, understand relationships among its arguments and construct descriptive answers.

What Does RBI Descriptive RC Actually Test?

Do not assume that Reading Comprehension is simply:

Find sentence -> Copy sentence -> Get marks

A descriptive RC may require you to:

  • identify the author’s central argument;
  • explain causes and consequences;
  • interpret an observation;
  • connect different parts of the passage;
  • draw an inference; and
  • express the answer clearly in your own words.

A useful approach is:

Understand the Question -> Locate the Relevant Idea -> Interpret -> Answer Precisely

Avoid copying unnecessarily large portions of the passage.

What Was the Biggest Challenge in RBI Grade B 2026 English?

The individual questions were only one part of the challenge.

The other major factor was time.

Candidates had 90 minutes for 100 marks.

Within that period, they had to handle a long essay, compress a detailed Precis passage and answer six descriptive RC questions.

Spending excessive time perfecting the 40-mark essay could therefore leave insufficient time for the remaining 60 marks.

This is why full-length timed practice eventually becomes essential.

How Should You Use These PYQs for RBI Grade B 2027?

Do not merely read the 2026 questions and move on.

Use them as a diagnostic tool.

For Essay

Take each of the four themes and spend 5-7 minutes creating an outline.

Ask yourself:

Can I generate 6-8 relevant arguments without searching Google?

If not, you have identified a content gap.

For Precis

Practise with long analytical passages covering unfamiliar topics.

Your goal should be to identify the central argument before you begin writing.

For RC

Practise answering analytical questions in your own words instead of copying directly from the passage.

And eventually, combine all three under a 90-minute timed mock.

Do Not Try to Predict RBI Grade B 2027 from One Paper

Previous Year Questions are valuable, but they should be used correctly.

The fact that RBI asked ageing population in 2026 does not mean that another demographic essay must appear in 2027.

Similarly, a Management essay in 2026 does not guarantee one in 2027.

PYQs are more useful for understanding:

Depth | Variety | Question Style | Analytical Demand | Writing Requirement

rather than predicting the exact next question.

Prepare the skill behind the question, not merely the previous question itself.

Start Your RBI Grade B 2027 Preparation with the Actual Level in Mind

The RBI Grade B 2026 Descriptive English paper offers one particularly important lesson:

English Writing Skills is not merely a grammar test.

It requires candidates to take knowledge from economics, society, current affairs, education and management and communicate it through clear, structured writing.

For RBI Grade B 2027, your preparation should therefore integrate:

Knowledge + Analysis + Structure + Language + Time Management
