RBI Grade B 2027 Descriptive English: Complete Preparation Guide

Understand the paper, learn section-wise techniques and build a practical plan for Essay, Precis and Reading Comprehension.

Start here: Descriptive English is a skill-based paper. You improve by writing, receiving specific feedback and correcting recurring mistakes—not by collecting model answers alone. This guide shows what to practise and why.

1. Understanding the Descriptive English Paper

RBI Grade B Phase II Descriptive English evaluates how clearly you can read, think, organise information and communicate in formal English. Unlike objective questions, descriptive answers reveal your ability to build arguments, summarise complex ideas and respond precisely to questions.

For planning purposes, Bank Whizz uses the following 100-mark, 90-minute practice structure, based on the reported 2026 pattern. Candidates should confirm the official 2027 scheme once RBI releases its notification.

ComponentMarksBank Whizz suggested time
Essay Writing4035 minutes
Precis Writing3025 minutes
Reading Comprehension3030 minutes
Total10090 minutes

Section-wise times are study recommendations, not independently verified RBI section-specific timers. Exact instructions, word limits and marks are subject to the official 2027 notification.

2. What the 2026 Paper Tells 2027 Aspirants

Memory-based reports of the examination held on 25 July 2026 describe essay themes involving leadership and formal designation, the effects of war on non-warring economies, knowledge and ignorance, and ageing populations. The reported précis theme connected architecture and public health, while the comprehension material involved education reform and artificial intelligence.

The lesson is clear: do not restrict preparation to banking facts alone. Build the ability to write on social, economic, ethical, managerial, scientific and philosophical issues. The exact original question wording has not been officially authenticated.

3. Essay Writing: A Practical Method

A strong essay answers the precise question, maintains a consistent position and develops arguments logically. Avoid treating the essay as a collection of memorised facts.

  1. Decode the prompt: underline the instruction word (discuss, examine, analyse) and identify the central issue.
  2. Plan before typing: decide your thesis, three or four main arguments, a counterpoint and a balanced conclusion.
  3. Write a focused introduction: define the issue and state the direction of your argument.
  4. Develop body paragraphs: one clear idea per paragraph, followed by explanation and a relevant example.
  5. Conclude with judgment: synthesise your reasoning rather than repeat your introduction.

For Bank Whizz diagnostic practice, candidates may target 600–620 words. Treat this as a mock-specific instruction; always follow the word limit shown in the actual examination.

Example planning prompt: “Impact of an ageing population on socio-economic development.” Possible angles include workforce participation, healthcare expenditure, pensions, intergenerational equity and productivity-enhancing policy responses.

4. Precis Writing: Accuracy Before Decoration

Precis writing tests your ability to preserve the essential meaning of a passage while reducing its length. It is not a sentence-by-sentence rewrite.

  1. Read once for the overall argument and again for the logical sequence.
  2. Identify the thesis, supporting claims and final conclusion.
  3. Remove repetition, illustrations, quotations and minor examples unless indispensable.
  4. Write in your own words without inserting personal opinions.
  5. Check cohesion, grammar, title and the required length.

In our free diagnostic mock, the original practice passage is 510 words and the target précis is approximately 170 words. These are Bank Whizz mock specifications, not a universal RBI rule.

5. Reading Comprehension: Answer What Is Asked

Descriptive comprehension rewards accurate interpretation and disciplined expression. A polished but irrelevant answer is weaker than a concise response grounded in the passage.

  1. Read the questions before your second pass through the passage.
  2. Distinguish the author’s claim from examples or opposing views.
  3. Use only passage-supported inferences; avoid outside assumptions.
  4. Answer in your own words with a direct opening sentence.
  5. Check whether each answer addresses every part of the question.

Bank Whizz’s diagnostic comprehension set includes six descriptive questions carrying five marks each, inspired by reported themes of educational reform, AI and grading practices.

6. A 30-Day Preparation Roadmap

DaysFocusOutput
1–5Baseline diagnostic and grammar auditOne essay, one précis, one comprehension attempt
6–12Essay structure and idea generationThree timed essay outlines and two full essays
13–19Precis technique and editingFour précis exercises with self-checks
20–25Inference and answer precisionThree descriptive comprehension sets
26–30Integration and timed practiceOne full mock plus review and revision

Adapt the workload to your starting level. The goal is steady improvement, not accumulating attempts without analysing mistakes.

7. How to Review Your Writing

After each attempt, assess your response using five lenses: task relevance, content depth, logical organisation, language accuracy and time management. Keep an error log: for example, “introduction too general,” “missed author’s inference,” or “precis includes unnecessary examples.” Correcting recurring errors is more valuable than merely increasing the number of mocks.

Bank Whizz’s free diagnostic course is designed to help identify these gaps through evaluation and actionable feedback. The course advertises a 24-hour evaluation turnaround after successful submission; check your dashboard for the actual evaluation.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RBI Grade B 2027 descriptive English pattern officially confirmed?

Not by this guide. The structure used here is based on reported prior-exam information and Bank Whizz practice settings. Refer to RBI’s 2027 recruitment notification for final rules.

Can beginners start without strong vocabulary?

Yes. Start with sentence clarity, logical paragraphing and accurate comprehension. Advanced vocabulary is less useful than precise, readable English.

Should I memorise model essays?

No. Learn how to organise arguments and adapt examples. Memorised essays may fail to address the exact question.

How often should I practise?

Short, reviewed practice several times a week is more effective than frequent submissions without reflection. Use your diagnostic results to prioritise weaker areas.

Are the 2026 questions reproduced exactly?

No. The themes are based on memory-based reports, and practice passages are original material. The official verbatim paper has not been established.
