The PFRDA Grade A Phase 2 Exam Pattern 2026 is one of the most important things aspirants should understand before planning their preparation. Phase II is fundamentally different from Phase I because candidates must handle both Descriptive English and stream-specific objective questions, and Phase II performance plays a major role in final selection.
Based on the latest officially available PFRDA Grade A recruitment pattern, Phase II consists of:
Paper 1 – English Descriptive Test
Paper 2 – Stream-Specific Objective Test
The two papers carry different weightages, and there are important rules regarding cut-offs and evaluation that every serious aspirant should understand.
In this Bank Whizz guide, we explain the complete PFRDA Grade A Phase 2 pattern and how candidates should approach both papers strategically.
Important Note: The official PFRDA Grade A 2026 recruitment notification is awaited. Therefore, the examination pattern discussed below is based on the official PFRDA Grade A 2025 notification and Phase II Information Handout, which are the latest available official references. Candidates should verify the details after the 2026 notification is released.
PFRDA Grade A Selection Process
Under the 2025 recruitment process, selection for PFRDA Grade A followed three stages:
Phase I – Online Screening Examination
Phase II – Online Examination
Phase III – Interview
Phase I consisted of two objective papers and was used for shortlisting candidates for Phase II.
Importantly, Phase I marks were not counted towards final selection.
Once candidates reached Phase II, the nature of the competition changed significantly because Phase II marks contributed to the final selection process.
PFRDA Grade A Phase 2 Exam Pattern
As per the official PFRDA Grade A 2025 notification, Phase II consisted of two papers of 100 marks each.
The latest available pattern was:
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | Duration | Weightage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | English Descriptive Test | 3 | 100 | 60 Minutes | 1/3rd |
| Paper 2 | Stream-Specific Objective Test | 50 | 100 | 40 Minutes | 2/3rd |
Thus, Phase II tested two different abilities.
Paper 1 tested candidates’ English drafting and written communication skills.
Paper 2 tested their knowledge of the subjects relevant to their stream.
Although both papers carried 100 raw marks, their Phase II weightages were different.
Paper 1: PFRDA Grade A Descriptive English
Paper 1 was common to all streams and was described in the official notification as:
English (Descriptive Test) to test the drafting skills
The paper consisted of 3 questions carrying 100 marks in total, with a duration of 60 minutes.
The official Phase II Information Handout identified the three components as:
1. Essay Writing
Candidates are required to write an essay on the given topic.
Essay Writing tests:
- Understanding of the topic
- Idea generation
- Organisation
- Analysis
- Coherence
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
- Written communication
A strong essay should normally have a logical progression such as:
Introduction → Main Discussion → Analysis → Way Forward → Conclusion
Candidates should avoid memorising complete model essays because the actual examination may present familiar issues from unfamiliar angles.
2. Precis Writing
The official 2025 Phase II handout provided a sample question requiring candidates to write a précis of a passage in approximately 150 words and provide a suitable title.
Precis Writing tests your ability to:
- Understand a passage
- Identify its central theme
- Select essential ideas
- Remove unnecessary details
- Compress information
- Paraphrase effectively
- Maintain coherence
- Provide an appropriate title
A practical method is:
Read → Understand → Identify → Filter → Organise → Paraphrase → Compress → Review
Precis Writing should therefore be practised as a separate skill rather than treated as ordinary summary writing.
3. English Comprehension
The third component is English Comprehension based on a passage.
Candidates need to read the passage and type answers to the questions that follow.
The skill can be understood as:
Read → Understand → Locate → Interpret → Frame → Answer
Answers should be direct, relevant and faithful to the passage.
Avoid unnecessarily copying entire paragraphs when a concise answer can address the question accurately.
Paper 2: PFRDA Grade A Objective Paper
Paper 2 of Phase II is an objective examination.
For the General Stream, the 2025 notification specified multiple-choice questions on:
- Commerce
- Accountancy
- Management
- Finance
- Costing
- Companies Act
- Economics
- Pension Sector
For specialist streams, Paper 2 consisted of multiple-choice questions relating to the specialised subject of the respective stream.
Under the latest pattern:
Questions: 50
Maximum Marks: 100
Duration: 40 Minutes
Phase II Weightage: 2/3rd
There was also negative marking of one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question for incorrect answers in Paper 2.
Accuracy therefore matters along with knowledge and speed.
Paper 1 vs Paper 2: Understanding the Weightage
One important feature of the PFRDA Phase II pattern is that both papers carry 100 raw marks but have different weightages.
Descriptive Paper 1 = 1/3rd
Objective Paper 2 = 2/3rd
This means Paper 2 has twice the weightage of Paper 1 while calculating Phase II performance.
However, this should not lead candidates to neglect Descriptive English.
There is an important reason.
Paper 2 Qualifying Rule for Descriptive Evaluation
According to the 2025 notification, Paper 1 was evaluated only for candidates who obtained the minimum qualifying marks in Paper 2.
The minimum qualifying marks for Paper 2 were to be decided based on candidates’ performance.
Therefore, the sequence effectively becomes:
Perform sufficiently in Paper 2 → Paper 1 gets evaluated → Phase II performance considered for shortlisting
This makes Paper 2 critically important.
But once your Descriptive English paper is evaluated, its performance also contributes to your Phase II score.
The correct preparation strategy is therefore not:
Objective OR Descriptive
It is:
Objective + Descriptive
Separate and Aggregate Cut-Offs
Another crucial feature of the latest Phase II pattern is the cut-off mechanism.
Candidates were required to secure:
Separate cut-off marks in each paper
and
Aggregate cut-off marks in Phase II
to be shortlisted for Phase III.
The minimum aggregate cut-off was to be decided by PFRDA in relation to the number of vacancies.
This is another reason why relying exclusively on Paper 2 while ignoring Descriptive English can be risky.
How Important Is Phase 2 for Final Selection?
Very important.
Under the PFRDA Grade A 2025 selection process:
Phase II Written Examination = 85% weightage
Phase III Interview = 15% weightage
Final selection was based on the combined weighted performance in Phase II and Phase III.
Phase I, meanwhile, was only a screening stage.
This means candidates should mentally shift their strategy after Phase I:
Phase I → Qualify
Phase II → Score Competitively
Phase III → Convert
Phase II is therefore not merely another qualifying hurdle.
How to Prepare Objective + Descriptive Together
The best preparation strategy is to avoid treating the two papers as completely separate worlds.
For Paper 2
Prioritise:
Concept Building → Revision → MCQ Practice → Accuracy → Mock Tests
Since Paper 2 carries 2/3rd weightage and determines whether Paper 1 gets evaluated, it requires substantial preparation time.
For Descriptive Paper 1
Follow:
Learn → Write → Evaluate → Correct → Rewrite → Improve
Practise Essay, Precis and Comprehension individually before moving to full-length simulations.
Do not wait until Phase I results to begin writing practice.
Writing ability develops gradually.
Typing Practice for Paper 1
The official Phase II handout states that Descriptive English questions appear on the computer monitor and answers have to be typed using the keyboard.
Therefore, candidates should eventually shift from handwritten preparation to computer-based practice.
Focus on:
- Accurate typing
- Paragraph formation
- Spelling
- Quick editing
- Thinking while typing
- Time management
Your objective should be to ensure that typing does not become a limitation during the 60-minute examination.
Final Strategy for PFRDA Grade A Phase 2 2026
Based on the latest available pattern, PFRDA Grade A Phase II requires candidates to master two very different examination formats:
Paper 1: Descriptive English – 100 Marks – 1/3rd Weightage
Paper 2: Objective Stream-Specific Paper – 100 Marks – 2/3rd Weightage
Paper 2 deserves significant attention because of its higher weightage and the qualifying condition attached to Paper 1 evaluation.
At the same time, Descriptive English should never become an afterthought.
Essay, Precis and Comprehension require skills that cannot be developed effectively through last-minute preparation.
For PFRDA Grade A 2026, prepare both papers with different but complementary strategies.
